Moselland Kabinett Riesling 2007
Germany
When it comes to sweetness in wines, there’s dessert sweet and there’s off-dry. The former is meant for end-of-meal pleasures, but off-dry wines can be enjoyed anytime of the meal. Germany is the most famous home of wines in this style, especially its Rieslings: Riesling doesn’t have to be sweet, but it does a good job of it. Why Germany? The climate is so cool that grapes retain their acidity more so than in warmer parts of the world – if you picked a grape off the vine, you’d find it a bit tart. The small amount of sugar balances that tartness and leads to a light-bodied, soft, fresh wine, in this case with some minerally notes plus touches of peach and tangerine.
