Looking Glass Lane Merlot 2008
Lodi, California
In its homeland, Bordeaux, Merlot is the most planted grape, even if Cabernet Sauvignon gets all the publicity. In truth the two, and other grapes, like Cabernet Franc, are generally blended together; Cabernet Sauvignon provides the structure and tannins for aging, whereas Merlot brings the up-front fruit and aromatics. So it's no wonder that Merlot often does perfectly fine by itself when you want a young fresh wine to drink, without years of cellar aging.
The Looking Glass Lane Merlot lives up to that goal: medium-bodied, with great cherry, plum and dark berry notes, plus a whiff of smoky earth to provide some contrast; the finish is dry, but smooth.

Good Merlot. Just purchased again. Smooth with a smooth finish.
Try the Looking Glass Lane Merlot with lighter meats: pork chops, turkey and barbecued chicken. It also pairs well with soft cheeses like Camembert or Brie.
