Surfrider California Red 2005
Malibu, California
Wine and surfing – does it get any more Californian than that? And the surfing theme is no gimmick; the vineyards are about four miles from the beach that so enthralled Gidget and the Beach Boys. Plus, $1.00 of each bottle sold goes to the Surfrider Foundation, which helps protect our oceans and beaches.
Ironically, instead of being made from a single grape variety like most Californian wines, this wine is a traditional Bordeaux-style blend. It combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Like a good longboard, the wine is classic; full-bodied but firm, with notes of cassis and dark plum supporting spicy touches of cedar and pipe tobacco. The finish is nice and long, with dry but smooth tannins.

The Surfrider Red pairs well with grilled meats like a filet or lamb; it also makes a fine accompaniment to meat pies or mature cheeses like Cheddar or Gouda.
