Lapis Luna Romanza Zinfandel 2005

Back before there was Napa or Russian River Valley wines, Lodi was home to some of California's first grapevines. That means old vines today - decades old, in some cases - which make for rich, intense flavors in wine. The "Romanza" is then tempered with some Sangiovese, the grape at the heart of the Italian classic Chianti - it keeps the Zin from getting too heavy, so while the wine is full and lush, it doesn't get cloying. Blackberry, raspberry, and milk chocolate aromas dominate, balanced by a touch of licorice and peppery spice.
