Laughing Raven Barbera Reserve 2003
Alexander Valley, California
Italian families have a long tradition and presence in California winemaking; Italian grapes, less so. However, some producers are exploring Italian varieties, offering an exciting change to the more usual Cabs and Pinot Noirs. The Barbera grape is native to Piedmont, in northern Italy; Laughing Raven's winemaker, Jose Zero, praises its light tannins and fresh character. The 2003 shows lots of black cherry and plum aromas complemented by notes of smoke and chocolate from its time spent aging in oak. While it is full-bodied, it stays smooth, round and refreshing.

A great California wine that went great with our traditional Italian Sunday pasta.
So robust coming from the tiniest vineyard. I enjoyed it completely.

The Laughing Raven Barbera is very flexible at the table; it works well with fish like salmon or halibut, but will also stand up to meat well. Its low tannins also lend it to barbecue, Mexican cuisine, and pizza.
