Merlot gets a bad rap, because it’s easy to make into a big, fuzzy wine without any real character. However, a little discipline in the vineyards – and choosing the right, slow-ripening vineyards in the first place – can yield Merlot with elegance, smooth fruit flavors, and great flexibility at the table. The Dancing River is of this latter sort, with black plum, raspberry, and cherry aromas, as well as a light chocolate note. It’s not too heavy, with lots of freshness and lift.

The Dancing River Merlot is superbly food-friendly: it has enough body to stand up to beef and heavy sauces, but won’t overwhelm chicken, pork, or even many fish dishes. That lift and freshness makes it especially handy with tomato-centric dishes like pizza and barbecue.

a very nice California Merlot. aromas are light but nice.. fairly light for such a nice dark color
