Las Almas Chardonnay 2006
Casablanca Valley, Chile
The Casablanca Valley, north of the capital, Santiago, works like a vacuum, sucking in the cool air of the Pacific Ocean. For a long time Chilean winegrowers ignored the region, assuming it was too cool to ripen grapes for quality wines. Some experiments in the 1980s proved otherwise, and the region went on to establish itself as South America’s best source for elegant, complex white wines. Chardonnay does particularly well there, developing rich tropical fruit aromas without becoming fat and cloying. The Las Almas lives up to that potential, with aromas of mango, lemon, and even a touch of banana, as well as a smooth mouthfeel and a clean finish.

The Las Almas Chardonnay goes very well with seafood, especially shrimp, scallops, and white fish like grouper. It also has enough body to match many chicken dishes and vegetarian pastas.
