The Story behind the Surfrider Foundation
Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, the Surfrider Foundation's mission is to protect our world's oceans and beaches. Twenty-five years later, Surfrider has grown to include over 50,000 members amongst its ranks and has become a powerful force in helping save our planet. Surfers, swimmers, kayakers and beach lovers make up the Surfrider Foundation's volunteers, who work to spread information about how vital it is to keep water clean and maintain a beautiful beach everyone can enjoy. Together, they have fought many environmental offenses to the world's oceans and beaches. Surfrider's accomplishments include winning the second largest Clean Water Act suit in American history, in the process preventing over 40,000 environmental violations of the law. They also stopped a daily 240 million gallon discharge of sewage into the ocean. The foundation's team of members even swam out into 38-degree water to protest a dioxin dump into the New Jersey coast. For their dedication in preserving the nation's beaches, the Surfrider Foundation has won many awards, including the national 'Renew America' Award. The Surfrider Foundation has made a habit of forming key relationships with like-minded organizations to help further their environmental cause. Situated five miles from the world renowned beaches in Malibu, their partnership with Rosenthal –The Malibu Estate vineyards has proven to be a natural fit. All of Rosenthal's vineyards are situated in a scenic valley above the coastal fogline at least 1,400 above the sea. The vineyards receive a cooling breeze from the coast which intensifies the aroma and fruit for which Rosenthal - The Malibu Estate has become famous. All of the grapes are unfiltered and unfined, ensuring that the wines maintain the depth and flavor that is often lost during the filtration and fining process. After the grapes are handpicked during harvest, they are immediately brought to the winery where they are crushed and processed in the same day. The grapes are then aged in the finest French oak barrels available to showcase the best features of the wine.
The Surfrider organization and Rosenthal - The Malibu Estate have partnered to design a label and designate a special wine that incorporates Malibu's unique coastal lifestyle with fine wines, called Surfrider. For every bottle of wine sold, Rosenthal Vineyards gives a donation to the Surfrider Foundation. Together, they are working to keep our oceans safe and beautiful for the future.
