Spotlight on Brouilly

Classic Winemaking Region of France

Spotlight on Brouilly

Brouilly, the largest wine area of the Beaujolais region of France, is located on the slopes of a dormant volcano for which it is named after. The area contains almost 3,000 acres of vineyards and the wines, made from Gamay grapes, are delicate and fruity with nuances of strawberries, bananas and peaches. The vines here are grown on the favored granite base. It is the only cru to allow grapes other than Gamay to be planted, although few choose to take advantage.

Our current Brouilly comes from vineyards planted on the Château de Pierreux, one of the region’s most beautiful estates. Here, in shallow, highly absorbent sandy soil consisting of pink granite dotted with blue porphyry stones (hurled out several million years ago by the Brouilly volcano), Gamay vines grow in solitary splendour.
