Cariñena – Spanish Roots, Easy Choice
About Carignane
Cariñena is a red wine grape that originated in the Cariñena region of Aragon, Spain, which is one of the oldest protected growing regions in Europe. The Cariñena vineyards are typically located near the center of this region, on a plateau called “Campo de Cariñena.” The climate produces long hot summers and even longer autumns with little to no rain, creating a very low yield of grapes. From Spain, the Cariñena grape gained prominence in Algeria, was then exported to France in the 1960’s and throughout the world thereafter. It’s traditionally a high alcohol content wine produced for local consumption, but for exports it’s blended to create a fruitier, lighter, well-balanced wine in response to the tastes of the average export consumer. Many of these blends will contain Tempranillo, Syrah and/or Grenache red wine grapes to add body, color and fruitiness. You may see this versatile grape under a variety of names like Carignane in California, Carinyena in Catalonia, Pinot Evara in Portugal and Carignan Noir in France. Try the Campo Marin Cariñena Crianza 2006; enjoy on its own or pair with grilled meats, sausage, and chicken.
